About this deal

Here we see the shiny new D500 next to the venerable old D300S. Overall size is very similar – the D300S with squarer shoulders and rounder hips. The old boy is noticeably heftier at 840g versus 760g. I always appreciated the weightiness and solid feel of the D300/D300S. It meant business.

The novice scene modes (which I never used and got in the way) on the left dial are replaced with more useful controls keeping in line with the other Nikon pro bodies. The 2.36-million-dot rear screen is superb – it’s impressively detailed, while giving accurate colour rendition. Its ability to tilt 90° upwards or downwards can be handy in some situations for shooting from odd angles, although it’s difficult to get away from the fact that the D500 is vastly more competent when you’re using the viewfinder, compared to shooting in live view. Note that Nikon's own AC adapter/battery adapter solution output 9V with a 4.5 A rating. 7V will typically be too low voltage to work as there is some voltage drop during mirror movement. That has been my general experience with 3rd party off-the-shelf solutions too - at least in the one case where I bought a Chinese AC mains adapter for a Canon DSLR. I could not confirm it, but my suspicion was that it did not provide enough volts. That was certainly the biggest issue when I worked with someone else to build a custom DC-DC converter to power earlier Canon DSLRs (20D/30D/5D) - it was a balancing act to get the voltage high enough, while ensuring it was not so high as to potentially damage the camera. The D300 underwent a relatively minor refresh with the D300S in 2009, but after that Nikon seemed to abandon the idea, insisting that its D7000-series of enthusiast-focused DSLRs met the needs of the majority of enthusiasts. But in 2016 Nikon relented and, just in time for a summer of European Championship football and the Olympic Games, produced a genuine successor in the shape of the D500, alongside the professional Nikon D5, and with an astonishing set of specifications that are still impressive today.

The camera was returned from Nikon late last week after intervention by my dealer, for 3 weeks it sat with the status quoting "awaiting repair". Within 12 hours it went from that status to "awaiting dispatch"! The camera arrived and report stated "Camera examined, cleaned and no fault found". However, on return the battery was 100% charged when I sent it with a 30% charge. All my camera setting were as left, but the problem seems to have improved. I have taken 215 images and the battery condition is 95%. So, why are Nikon insisting on "no fault found? Video resolution4K (UHD) 3,840 x2,160 pixels at 30/25/24fps, Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at60/50/30/25/24fps What that means is that the firmware is getting lost periodically and doing things in terms of placing values in the internal memory incorrectly, or not at all. Thus, the “power” issues could very well be due to buggy firmware, not any real problem in the camera." Shutter speeds are available from 1/8000th second to 30 seconds. There’s a Bulb setting for extra long exposures. The camera has a sync speed of 1/250th second and several self-timer modes. The latter include 2, 5, 10, 20 second durations with 1 to 9 exposures at various intervals. I have been using Nikon D500 from past one month now. The camera starts warming up in first 30-60 secs from the right side where the thumb is placed. If i allow the camera to keep filming up to 5 mins, it becomes a hot cake from the right side as well as the steel plate/ area below the tilted screen. The D500 is large for a DX camera. It is significantly larger and heavier than the D7200 and absolutely dwarfs the D5500. But for me the relatively large size is a good thing. The D7200 is just too small to feel really comfortable in my hand. There is not quite enough to grab onto and my little finger feels like it’s about to fall off the bottom. By contrast the D500 has a tall and deep, though slightly narrow, grip which is very comfortable. Things improve when adding a vertical grip to each camera. The MB-D15 for the D7200 transforms it into a full-size camera. Now all my fingers fit and when held vertically I actually find it slightly more comfortable than the MB-D17 on the D500. The most similar camera to the D500 within Nikon’s own lineup is the D7500. The D7500 is a slightly lower-end camera and part of the D7000-series DSLRs. However, the two cameras have the same sensor, meaning that their image quality and high ISO performance is identical. Which one is right for you? To help answer that question, here’s a table of their most important differences: Camera Feature

But if you have Nikon lenses and are looking for a step-up camera that's a solid performer with great image quality, you can’t go wrong with the Nikon D500. Overall image quality is very good, but then again the same is true of much cheaper Nikon APS-C DSLRs. Indeed, at low ISOs there’s no real advantage in this area compared to the D7200 or indeed the D5500. But the D500 keeps going longer as the ISO is raised, and so long as you don’t expect miracles, it’s still capable of giving quite usable files at its top standard setting of ISO 51,200, and maybe even a stop higher. However, I can’t help but think that the extended settings exist more for marketing value than practical use. Nikon D500 review – Dynamic range, resolution and noise Also, it’s best to shoot in aperture priority mode with Auto ISO for wildlife photography. An alternative is to shoot in manual mode with Auto ISO, but that can lead to overexposed photos if you shoot in bright environments, because the Auto ISO won’t be able to go below 100. Nikon D500 + 500mm PF f/5.6 @ 500mm, ISO 3600, 1/400, f/5.6 Wear out the mirror mechanism over time? I haven't heard of that being a problem. It may have happened to someone but I haven't heard of it. I think it is significant that camera manufacturers rate the expected lifetime of the shutter mechanism but not the expected lifetime of the mirror mechanism. During normal operation the mirror cycles up and down just as many times as the shutter opens and closes. That manufacturers don't rate the life of the mirror mechanism means they aren't worried about it.

Nikon D500 review – SnapBridge

As might be expected, the D500 stands out from the D7200 and D300S in almost every way. Performance improvements include a very fast top frame rate with a huge buffer. The metering module is very high resolution compared to the older cameras and is also far more capable in low light. On paper, at least it has 3 stops greater sensitivity. I found a solution using a battery bank with a 5V 2.3A output, a 5V to 9V DC-DC converter with 1 A output rating which output is fed though a homemade circuit with a super-capacitor to distribute power draw over longer time, which is then fed to the fake off the shelf battery adapter. The super-capacitor circuit limits power draw from the DC-DC converter to about 1A. I provided details and analysis of D500 power draw at the Nikongear forum: I am struggling to get 500 shots per charge on a single battery - I should be getting about 1,200 according to Nikon's documentation? Doesn't matter if I put the older or newer battery in the grip, still getting poor results and also poor results when used in the body too (without the grip). When it comes to metering, four patterns are available – matrix, centreweighted, spot and highlight weighted. The default matrix system is very strongly biased towards ‘correct’ exposure of whatever is under the active AF area, regardless of whether this suits the scene as a whole. This approach has it merits, but does have a certain tendency to clip highlights in high-contrast scenes. In such situations I appreciated having the highlight-weighted option which, as its name suggests, aims to maintain highlight detail, allowing you to bring up shadow regions in post-processing. The D500 that i have not only heats up while making movies, it starts warming up while taking images in CH2. And by taking images i do no mean i am pressing the button until it takes 200 frames. I am a bird watcher and in i have to take images in CH2, 5 to 15 frames with one press max to get the desired shot.

In good light, image quality is superb, while the tilting screen helps with shooting from unusual angles. Image credit: Andy Westlake These include an extended top ISO of 1.6 million, alongside a 153-point AF system and 10fps continuous burst shooting. On paper, it’s the best APS-C DSLR so far, and with the end of DSLR production it’s not likely to be surpassed.
